The peanut belongs to the botanical family Fabaceae. It is classified as both a grain legume and, due to its high oil content, an oil crop. The oldest known remains of pods have been dated at about 7,600 years old, possibly a wild species that was in cultivation. Its Cultivation was well-established in South America before the Spanish arrived. The peanut was later spread worldwide by European traders, and cultivation is now widespread in tropical and subtropical regions.
No matter what route they took , peanuts spread quite quickly, once it was found that they were easy to grow and tolerant of dry conditions, as in the Deccan areas remain its growing centers in India. It is probable that the plant was introduced into India at the earliest by the first half of the sixteenth century. From 1850, in particular, cultivation boomed — and yet the use was almost only for oil.
